My shortest dog ownership experience is now over. Ame and I were looking to adopt a dog this weekend from the local shelter, and we chose one that we both agreed on. He was a Rat Terrier and the handlers at the shelter let us walk him around the grounds for a bit. We really liked him and named him Vorenus. Ame and I are big nerds and named him for a principal character from the HBO Series Rome.

After a visit to the vet for some shots we brought him home and walked, fed, and watered him. Things were good; the cat hated the new dog, but we knew she’d get used to him eventually. But as we laid down for the night, the dog curled up with us and when Ame reached to pet him he growled at her. Not a good sign. He was incredibly attached to me, it seemed, and no one would disturb that, not even the alpha female.

So, to put her mind at ease, I took Vorenus into the other bedroom and slept there. He’s now back at the shelter, presumably as his original name. He’d be great as a buddy for a single guy. I hope he gets adopted by someone soon.
