Pork and Lindy

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Yes, you read that right. It’s a sitcom idea I’ve had for years. It’s all about Charles Lindbergh and his adventures with his pet pig. The title capitalizes on the success of Mork and Mindy. Of course it’s a joke! It makes me laugh every time though, and the only person I make suffer through it is Bobby. That poor guy.

This “that’d be a great name for a sitcom” personal joke of mine isn’t nearly as prolific as “that’d be a great name for a band,” but it’s still fun. I don’t have many other ideas and sometimes I work a little too hard at it. Case in point:

The Pilgrims founded Plymouth Colony in the 1600s. Sure they were God-fearing, but all folk have a dark side. Sometimes murders take place, and the crimes have to be solved. One of the Pilgrims that made the famous crossing on the Mayflower was a converted Jew, and he also has a knack for detective work. This is a dark drama, and shot in black & white to really show the grit of the grim situations. Also, this detective is played by Bruce Campell, B-actor extraordinaire. I call it Bristol County Jew Noir.

Watchmen

Friday, October 10th, 2008

The Watchmen movie is supposed to be coming in 2009, so I picked up a copy of the graphic novel and have started into it. I’m not too far into the story, but it is very well done. When I first started it, I thought it was good, but I’d seen better: Fables came immediately to mind.

Bobby: if doc manhattin isnt nude in the movie im boycotting it
Bobby: >: |
Bobby: ill have a little sign
Steneub: like a no smoking sign, with a penis instead of a cigarette, INSIDE of a similar symbol – to show you’re against the banning of penises

Of course he’s kidding, but Dr. Manhattan is a blue energy man and he walks around naked (That’s not a spoiler – this happens in the first couple issues), and well, you see cock and balls. It’s not gratuitous and it’s makes perfect sense to see block and tackle there; one is simply used to censorship or to have it obscured or just out of frame.

I know pretty much nothing about Watchmen other than what I’ve read so far. It’s very good, and I want to see where it goes. I’ll probably have a 23 year-old late review posted when I’m done!

Still broken up about it

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

More than a year has passed and I still can’t let it go. I have dreams about going back to my old job and being with my old co-workers having fun and making games. Sometimes the bosses are glad to have me back, sometimes the office has been remodeled to varing degrees, but the theme is still the same: I wish I still worked there.

Ame and I think I miss the socialization most of all. I used to go to lunch almost everyday with Rich and Joel (funny enough they don’t work there anymore either) and others. After losing that job, I occasionally spent time out with Rich and others, and that was a lot of fun. Ame and I like Chad a lot, he’s a good guy. Steve’s a good one too, it’s just hard to schedule an outing with him sometimes – especially now with the schedule that Ame and I keep.

At the job I have now, I get along with most of my coworkers quite well. Alouna, a semi-boss of mine, is awesome, along with several others, but it’s hard to have any interactions with people because the workday is tightly scheduled. When I used to go to lunch with Rich & Co., we were gone “for about an hour,” we came back, and then finished up the tasks for the day. Here, lunch time is exactly 60 minutes, and a friend may be scheduled differently. The upshot is you end up eating alone with no real way to socialize. Or I could just not be trying hard enough.

But who cares? This is a temporary job anyway. I don’t want to stay.

Justin’s in Iraq!

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

My good friend from college, Justin Myers, is currently deployed in Iraq. He has a blog that you should check regularly, and I’ve even added a link over on the side there. Read his blog and wish him luck! Also, buy him stuff; he’s got an Amazon wish-list, but no mailing address just yet. He’s been in the region for a few weeks now, but he’s still getting settled in.

It’s not so much hot over there, as cold and rainy lately and he says it’s pretty safe inside the wire. He says the work he does is fun and cool, but still dangerous; it’s certainly not conventional “boots on the ground” type of work. I remember looking it up some time ago and didn’t find terribly much information – something with intelligence and propaganda. About that time, I asked him in person if he were involved in setting up antennae or communications equipment, and the only answer he could give me was “not exactly.”

Strobel’s blog

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

I never thought to click on the comment from my good friend, Strobel on the S.O.S. post a while back. He has a blog too! You should read it ’cause I’m adding his link to my sidebar here.
