Justin’s in Iraq!

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

My good friend from college, Justin Myers, is currently deployed in Iraq. He has a blog that you should check regularly, and I’ve even added a link over on the side there. Read his blog and wish him luck! Also, buy him stuff; he’s got an Amazon wish-list, but no mailing address just yet. He’s been in the region for a few weeks now, but he’s still getting settled in.

It’s not so much hot over there, as cold and rainy lately and he says it’s pretty safe inside the wire. He says the work he does is fun and cool, but still dangerous; it’s certainly not conventional “boots on the ground” type of work. I remember looking it up some time ago and didn’t find terribly much information – something with intelligence and propaganda. About that time, I asked him in person if he were involved in setting up antennae or communications equipment, and the only answer he could give me was “not exactly.”

War

The movie, War, sucked. I saw the previews and was excited because it had Jet Li and Jason Statham. I mean, how could you fuck this up? Oh… Philip G. Atwell as director. You may not have heard of him, and you’d be right! He’s directed such music videos as N.W.A.’s “Hello” and “Bitch Please.”

I really do blame Mr. Atwell for this failure. The story was pretty standard action cliché, but it just felt ridiculous because for an action movie, there was no action – just a bunch of half-second cuts of what looked like blurry Jason Statham. I never even saw Jet Li do anything noteworthy. That’s not cool, right?

I will say that I enjoyed the appearance of some Hollywood Foreign Equivalents. Oh, you’ve not heard of these? Enjoy!

Julianne Moore and her Japanese Equivalent, Devon Aoki

Christopher Walken and his Japanese equivalent, John Lone

Bruce Willis and his English Equivalent, Jason Statham

Am I so wrong here?
